Man dies in custody after bar brawl

A MAN has died in police custody, just moments after being arrested for assaulting patrons at a bar in Melbourne.

Police were called to the Antique Bar on Glen Huntly Road at Elsternwick, southeast of the city’s CBD, about 2.15am after a man inside the bar allegedly began assaulting fellow patrons.

In a statement, Victoria Police said when they arrived, the man was being “held down by a number of people”.

Officers moved in and arrested the man, but he lost consciousness soon after being handcuffed, police said.

Police tried reviving the man until Ambulance Victoria arrived and took over but, despite their efforts, he could not be saved and died at the scene.

The incident is being treated as a death in custody and will be investigated by the Homicide Squad along with the Professional Standards Command.

A post mortem examination will also be conducted to try and determine the cause of death.

Anyone with more information is urged to come forward and call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
