Man drowns in coast lake after fleeing from attempted break in

A MAN who allegedly tried to break into a home on the Gold Coast has drowned while trying to make a getaway.

A police spokesperson told myGC police divers found the body of a man in a lake at Robina around 1.30pm this afternoon.

It’s understood the male jumped into the water after he was disturbed trying to break into a nearby home on Blakehurst Place around 11.20am.

Neighbours then noticed the man struggling in the canal and went and got a boat to try and save him, however he disappeared.

“A resident told police that he had seen the man submerge and fail to resurface” a police spokesperson said.

Officers rushed to the scene and launched a major land, air and water search.

During the search, divers located the man deceased underwater in the vicinity of Narrabeen Court this afternoon.

Police said the man had been immersed in the water for “quite some time” before the dive squad located him.

Investigations to establish his identity are continuing.

Police say the death is not being treated as suspicious.
