Following investigations, specialist police and negotiators surrounded a house on Raglan Street at Wallsend about 1am.

Police said 10 people including the suspected shooter and a number of children were inside the home at the time.

After almost three hours of negotiations, the occupants exited the property without incident, police said.

A 30-year-old man was arrested and taken to Newcastle Police Station for questioning.

He was later transported to John Hunter Hospital for treatment to minor injuries before being released back into police custody.

In a statement on Sunday, NSW Police confirmed the man has since been charged with murder.

The 30-year-old has been remanded in custody and will appear in Newcastle Local Court tomorrow.

He is believed to have known the victim, who police said appeared to have been gunned down in a ‘targeted attack’.

No further information was available at the time of writing.
