A Gold Coast nurse who spent time volunteering in Afghanistan has won the 1029 Hot Tomato Gold Coast Nursing Award for May 2018.
Mary Stewart has been a nurse for over 25 years, and currently works in the medical assistant unit at the Gold Coast University Hospital.
“I love everything about being a nurse. I’m a giver and really enjoy caring for people. The motto I live by is ‘do unto others as you would do unto yourself and your family’ and I try to follow that everyday.”

Mary told myGC she is most passionate about helping those who are less fortunate.
“After 911, I paid to travel to Afghanistan and Tajikistan to volunteer as a registered nurse. It was so eye opening and was such an incredible experience.”
Along with a certificate, Mary wins $250 and is now a finalist in the Annual Awards where she could be awarded the annual winner’s cash prize of $5,000.
“I am so surprised to win and so appreciative. My next goal is to go on the Mercy Ships and help those with medical issues in third world countries, so I will putting the money towards that.”
