Matthew was nominated by his co-worker Elizabeth Wake, who told myGC that she had never come across a more selfless, dedicated and compassionate nurse.

“Many of our patients are in hospital for weeks requiring multiple surgeries for their injuries. This means spending a great deal of time away from family and friends and pets. Matt was instrumental in encouraging families to bring their dogs to the hospital so that the patient could be taken outside to see their beloved dogs. I cannot express to you the enjoyment that both the patient, the relatives and the dogs get in performing this task.

“More recently with the unfortunate shark attack on a young man at Ballina he was instrumental in contacting Mick Fanning to come a visit him to boost the patient’s morale after suffering a terrible event. These are just some of the things that are not in Matt’s job description, yet he has no qualms in doing these – it is literally anything for his patients to make them feel better whether this is physically or emotionally.

“I’ve learned so much from him and continue to do so. It’s an honour to work with him. I think he deserves a million awards but I know he would just say he is doing his job. I can’t stress this enough – he goes above and beyond in his role as a trauma case manager. I think that the patients in his care, although unlucky to be in hospital, are very lucky to be case managed by him.”

Along with a certificate, Matthew wins $250 and is now a finalist in the annual Gold Coast Nursing Award, where he could take home $5000 if he wins his category at the end of the year.
