TWEED locals will get to share in the glitz, glamour and excitement of the race that stops the nation when the Emirates Melbourne Cup trophy takes centre stage at a Gala Cocktail Party and fundraiser at Saltbar at Kingscliff on Wednesday 27 August.
Since 2003, the Emirates Melbourne Cup has travelled more than 345,000 kilometres, visiting 270 towns and cities and engaging with tens of thousands of people.
Destination Tweed CEO, Bill Tatchell, said Tweed was chosen as one of only 34 host venues for the 2014 tour of the 18 carat gold, $175,000 trophy in the lead up to Melbourne Cup Day on 4 November.

“We are thrilled that Tweed has been included on this year’s tour itinerary and hope everyone comes out in force to see this magnificent trophy,” he said.
“Every year the nation stops to watch the Melbourne Cup and we’re hoping that everyone on the Tweed stops by for a few hours to see the Cup and hear some of the inspirational stories and meet some of the colourful racing identities that are part of its history,” said Mr Tatchell.
“The Melbourne Cup has made a significant contribution to Australia’s social, sporting and racing culture over the past 154 years and this year it’s our turn to bring some of the excitement to Tweed,” he said.
Destination Tweed will use the historic Melbourne Cup visit and Gala Cocktail Party to raise much needed funds for the local charity, Riding for the Disabled, which provides horses, riding activities and experienced instructors for adults and children with disabilities.
Destination Tweed Marketing Manager Emma Cao said, “In true Melbourne Cup style, the red carpet will be rolled out, champagne will be flowing, and attendees are encouraged to dress to the nines, cup style.”
“There will be some spots in the winners’ circle for the best dressed and best hat, and we will be running racing-themed games and raffles on the night to raise money for our local Riding for the Disabled Association,” said Miss Cao.
For most people, this will be as close as they are ever likely to get to the Melbourne Cup, and those that come along to Saltbar on the night can take a photo of themselves with the Cup.
“I have no doubt there will be lots of ‘selfies’ with the Cup floating around facebook after the Cocktail Party, and I am sure there will be a few on Destination Tweed’s facebook page as well,” said Emma.
The Gala Cocktail Party starts at 6.30pm on Wednesday 27 August at Saltbar, Bells Boulevard, Salt Village. Tickets are $40 per person and are available by phoning 1300 725 822.
