Navy patrol ship destroyed in Brisbane blast

AN Australian Navy patrol ship has been severely damaged in a catastrophic explosion at a Brisbane shipyard.

Multiple fire crews responded to the alarm at the Hemmant shipyard just before midday.

HMAS Bundaberg – a 70 foot patrol vessel – was being repaired at the site when the blaze broke out in the belly of the ship.

Crews are still actively attempting to extinguish the fire and prevent it from spreading throughout the industrial building.

Peter Doherty from Seven News reports that the ship is one of 14 Armidale Class Patrol Boats heavily relied upon for Boarder Protection.

The cause of the fire remains unclear.
