Curator David Wu, who has operated 8 Street in Brisbane’s Westfield Garden City since 2014, said the Surfers location will be fully operational ahead of the 2018 Commonwealth Games. “8 Street at Cavill Lane will be inspired by the true Asian street food experience of delicious flavours, great value and theatrical cooking,” Mr Wu said.

“We want to create a loud and bustling traditional hawkers’ market, where diners can wander among open kitchens and be drawn in by the sights and sounds, then watch as their dish is created before their eyes. It will be like stepping into Asia in the heart of Surfers Paradise.”

Mr Wu named the venture after the Chinese culture’s most auspicious number, and shipped two containers of traditional building materials to create Brisbane’s inaugural 8 Street, which last year earned him the Brisbane Lord Mayor’s award for Multicultural Entrepreneur of the Year.

Phillip Wolanski, the owner of Cavill Lane, said 8 Street will take the Brisbane concept to an entire new level creating an exciting culture of laneway dining ideally matched to its location. “Asian cuisine in all its variations has certainly embedded itself in Australian culture, and we expect 8 Street at Cavill Lane to become a very popular destination for local families and visitors. The precinct will offer a memorable experience of sharing delicious food amid wonderfully eclectic laneway surrounds,” Mr Wolanski said.

“From a tourism perspective, 8 Street will be a drawcard for the very fast-growing contingent of annual visitors from China and other Asian countries to the Gold Coast, but also for our local residents and professionals to be able to come in and grab a quick bite of quality food at an affordable price. We expect to also attract local and visiting families to share a casual or celebratory meal at a unique and exciting destination.

Mr Wolanski said expressions of interest are now being sought from prospective tenants for the expansive laneway development. “We are seeking interest from food and beverage vendors representing a broad spectrum of regions across Asia, and have already had strong and abundant enquiry in this very exciting leasing opportunity from a number of prospective tenants,” he said.

The first stage of 8 Street at Cavill Lane is expected to open to the public in December 2017. For more information or to register your expression of interest, please contact David Wu on [email protected]
