Parts of NSW warned to brace for heavy rainfall, flash flooding

UPDATE @ 3.57pm AEDT: A DETAILED severe thunderstorm warning for large hail and heavy rainfall has just been issued for people in parts of the Blue Mountains/Hawkesbury and Sydney areas.

The Bureau of Meteorology warns that, at 3:55 pm, severe thunderstorms were detected on the weather radar near Wilberforce.

These thunderstorms are moving towards the southeast. They are forecast to affect Cattai and Glenorie by 4:25 pm and Hornsby, Berowra, Dural and Terrey Hills by 4:55 pm.

Large hailstones and heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding is likely.

A more general severe thunderstorm warning is also current for the Metropolitan, Central Tablelands, Central West Slopes and Plains and parts of the Hunter, Illawarra, Southern Tablelands, North West Slopes and Plains, Lower Western and Upper Western districts.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Move your car under cover.
* Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
* Don’t walk, ride your bike or drive through flood water.
* If you are trapped by flash flooding, seek refuge in the highest available place and ring 000 if you need rescue.
* Unplug computers and appliances.
* Avoid using the phone during the storm.
* Stay indoors away from windows, and keep children and pets indoors as well.
* For emergency help in floods and storms, ring the SES (NSW and ACT) on 132 500.

EARLIER @ 2.20pm AEDT: The weather bureau has just updated its severe thunderstorm warning for parts of NSW.

BOM says severe thunderstorms are likely to produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding in the warning area over the next several hours.

Locations which may be affected include Newcastle, Gosford, Orange, Canberra, Goulburn, Dubbo, Wagga Wagga, Albury and Bourke.

If severe thunderstorms develop in Sydney Newcastle Wollongong or surrounding areas or Canberra and Queanbeyan, a more detailed Severe Thunderstorm Warning will be issued to people in these areas.

The next warning is due to be issued by 5:20 pm.

Locations which may be affected include Gosford, Orange, Canberra, Goulburn, Wagga Wagga and Albury.

The next warning is due to be issued by 3:40 pm.

EARLIER @ 9.00am: A severe thunderstorm warning has just been issued for people in the South West Slopes and parts of the Central Tablelands, Southern Tablelands, Central West Slopes and Plains, Riverina and Lower Western Forecast Districts.

The weather bureau says the severe thunderstorms are likely to produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding in the warning area over the next several hours.

Locations which may be affected include Orange, Dubbo, Parkes, Wellington, Condobolin, Wagga Wagga, Albury, Young, West Wyalong, Tumbarumba, Griffith and Narrandera.
