PHOTOS: World’s best surfers join Gold Coast paddle-out

SOME of the world’s best surfers have joined locals in a massive ‘paddle out’ on the Gold Coast, to celebrate International Surfing Day and bring awareness to ocean health.

Eleven-time world champion Kelly Slater was among half-a-dozen of the World Surf League’s top competitors who paddled out alongside more than 100 local surfers at Kirra Beach on Saturday morning.

Other pro-surfers included Jack Freestone, Alana Blanchard, Josh Kerr, Bede Durbidge, and Wade Carmichael.

It was part of a global effort to bring awareness to ocean health, with more than 70 paddle out’s around the world.

World Surf League’s #StopTrashingWaves campaign pushes for a carbon neutral planet and aims to eliminate single-use plastics by the end of 2019 and “leave each place better than it was found”.
