Police ‘lucky to be alive’ after being attacked by man armed with large carving knife

UPDATE @ 1.45 PM: A MAN who tried to stab a police officer with a 20cm carving knife has been charged with attempted murder.

The male Leading Senior Constable and a female Probationary Constable, were returning to Eastwood Police Station just before 3am today when the horror unfolded.

Police allege the man produced a knife and attempted to stab the male officer three times before running away.

A number of officers gave chase and attempted to taser the man, however he seemed to be unaffected and continued to run from police. After a second taser attempt, the man finally fell to the ground where he was arrested.

The 28-year-old was taken to Ryde Police Station where he was charged with attempted murder.

He was refused bail to appear at Burwood Local Court later today.

EARLIER @ 11.45 AM: A police officer is lucky to have escaped with his life after being attacked by a “very dangerous man” armed with a 20cm carving knife.

The male Leading Senior Constable and a female Probationary Constable, were returning to Eastwood Police Station just before 3am today when the horror unfolded.

It’s understood a 28-year-old man lunged at the male officer with the large weapon as he and his colleague made their way towards the front of the building on Thursday morning.

Police say the male constable managed to block the man’s arm before he swung the knife a second and third time at the officer’s head before running away.

He has since been taken to Eastwood Police Station where inquiries into the incident are continuing.

At a press conference a short time ago, a NSW Police spokesperson praised the efforts of the officers involved, and said they were lucky to have not been injured of even killed.

“The actions of this male were to cause serious injury or death to police,” the spokesperson said.

An investigation into the motivation behind the attack is underway.
