Police officer injured while trying to arrest wanted man in Byron Bay

A WANTED man who has been on the run from police for almost a month has been arrested in Byron Bay.

The 22-year-old Illawarra man, who was wanted on firearms and drug offences, was taken into custody around midday on Wednesday after officers spotted him walking through a park on Bay Street.

It’s understood the man attempted to flee when police approached him, however he was arrested after a short struggle.

Police also allegedly found a large knife on him.

During the arrest, a male Senior Constable was injured and was taken to Byron Bay Hospital for treatment to a knee injury.

The wanted man was taken to Byron Bay Police Station and charged with the outstanding warrants and custody of knife in public place, resist arrest, and breach of bail.

He was refused bail to appear at Byron Bay Local Court today.
