Investigators struggle to identify driver killed in fiery crash

THE body of a driver killed in a fiery crash in the NSW Riverina was so badly burnt, police have so far been unable to formally identify the person.

The horrific crash happened on Gundagai Road, 25km outside of Junee, around 9.50am on Monday.

For reasons yet to be determined, police said a 4WD left the road and smashed into a tree.

Horrifically, the vehicle burst into flames on impact, trapping the driver inside.

“Members of the public had stopped and attempted to assist the driver but were beaten back by the flames that engulfed the vehicle,” NSW Police said in a statement at 2.15pm.

“The identity of the driver is yet to be confirmed due to the fire.”

As the investigations into the cause of the crash get underway, police are appealing for anyone who witnesses the incident to come forward.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
