Police swoop on Southport following violent street robbery

POLICE have saturated the Southport CBD in the hunt for a man following a violent street robbery near the Central Library this afternoon.

Early reports suggest the man bailed a woman up near the Southport Library around 12.30pm and “violently” robbed her of her mobile phone.

Multiple police crews, including the helicopter and dog squad, have since swooped on the area.

The main offender, described as being of Pacific Islander in appearance and wearing black shorts, a black cap and blue and white singlet, fled the scene on a pushbike.

At 12.50pm, the man was spotted hiding from the police helicopter under a tree near the intersection of Smith & Beale Streets.

But officers lost sight after he mounted his bike and reportedly took off down Brooke Street, past Southport State High School, after realising his cover had been blown.

There’s no further information available at this time.
