AN INVESTIGATION has been launched, after a man was fatally shot outside a northern New South Wales hospital on Friday night.
He was in the custody of two Corrective Services NSW officers, when he apparently tried to escape from the Lismore Base Hospital and began attacking one of the guards, around 7.30pm.
The 43-year-old was shot by the other guard and immediately moved back inside the hospital for treatment.

However, he died a short time later.
Officers from Richmond Police District responded and established a crime scene, with investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident underway.
Two Corrective Services officers are assisting police with inquiries.
Police have put out a call for anyone who was in the area and may have witnessed the incident or captured dashcam footage to come forward.
