With most people focused on celebrating the New Year with friends and family, the Blood Service is reminding people that the need for blood never takes a break.
The blood service are calling on donors, especially over the New Year period from 31st December to Saturday 3rd January to help patients suffering with cancer.
“At this time of the year we have great difficulty stockpiling a product called platelets, the clotting agent of the blood that is vital to helping cancer patients through their chemotherapy,” spokesman Shaun Inguanzo said.

“Platelets only have a shelf-life of five days so we need a constant number of donations over the Christmas and New Year holidays.”
“The blood received will help ensure that the one in three Australians who will need blood in their lifetimes can spend another new year with friends and family.”
