Young police officer fights for life after being mowed down by stolen car

UPDATE at 5:30 | A 16-YEAR-OLD boy and a 15-year-old girl have been charged with attempted murder after allegedly mowing down a police officer in a stolen car at Ipswich.

Constable Peter McAulay, 24, was run down by the stolen sedan while laying road spikes to stop the vehicle on Brisbane Road at Booval on Thursday morning.

The young officer sustained critical head injuries and is in an induced coma in the intensive care unit at Princess Alexandra Hospital after undergoing emergency surgery.

Police allege the sedan was stolen from Sunnybank Hills on Sunday, September 23.

The occupants – a 16-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl – fled the scene but were later arrested after being tracked down by a police dog.

Queensland Police released a statement a short time ago, confirming the boy and girl have been charged with one count each of attempted murder and unlawful use of a car.

UPDATE at 4:30 PM | THE Queensland police officer left fighting for his life in hospital after being mowed down by a stolen car at Ipswich has been identified.

Constable Peter McAulay, 24, was reportedly laying road spikes across Brisbane Road in Booval when he was struck about 5am on Thursday.

In a statement this afternoon, Queensland Police confirmed the young officer from Goodna sustained life-threatening head injuries, as well as a number of broken bones and fractures.

The 24-year-old remains in an induced coma in the intensive care unit at the Princess Alexandra Hospital after undergoing emergency surgery.

“Every officer and staff member of the Queensland Police Service (QPS) is thinking of Constable McAulay, his family and his loved ones today,” A Queensland Police spokesperson said.

“The QPS would also like to thank the doctors, nurses, paramedics, and other medical and support staff who have been involved in his treatment.

“[we are] providing support to those closest to Constable McAulay and would also like to acknowledge the support being provided by the Queensland Police Union of Employees.

“It is the sincere hope of the QPS that Constable McAulay’s condition improves as he is treated for his very serious injuries.”

Two teenagers, a boy and a girl, are in custody, assisting police with investigations.

No charges have yet been laid.

FIRST at 7:50 AM (by Shanee Dobeson) | A police officer is fighting for his life after being hit by a suspected stolen car in Ipswich this morning.

It’s understood police were pursuing the vehicle on Brisbane Road in Booval when the officer was struck around 5am.

A Qld Police spokesperson confirmed the officer was deploying road spikes when he was hit by the stolen car and dragged several metres.

He was treated at the scene by paramedics for critical head injuries before being rushed to the Princess Alexandra Hospital in a serious condition.

Two teenagers, a boy and a girl, are currently assisting police with investigations.
