QLDs oldest Nipper club to celebrate 50 years

The Tweed Heads and Coolangatta Surf Life Saving Club’s ‘Nippers’ will celebrate their 50th anniversary on Saturday 11 February.

The club has been a breeding ground for a number of prominent Aussie swimmers including Olympic Gold Medallist Chris Fydler, Ironwoman Champion Karla Gilbert, and the Gold Coast City’s acting Chief Lifeguard Chris Maynard.

Club Life Member and Nipper Foundation Member Alan Hickling said: “We have a great group of former members who are keen to share the stories that weave the rich tapestry of our proud nippers history.

“I can recall going to the Branch carnivals with all the Nippers travelling in the back of the local fruit truck with the side curtains pulled down, or the early days of Carnivals in Far North Queensland where our nippers had to wear stinger suits fashioned from ladies’ pantihose – in the days when children’s stingers suits were simply not available,” said Mr Hickling.

The 50th Anniversary function will be held from 4pm (QLD time) on Saturday 11 February. Tickets are $15 per person and can be purchased through the club’s office on (07) 5536 6901.
