THE WESTPAC Chopper has been called in to search for a possible missing swimmer off Mermaid Beach on Monday morning.
Lifeguards say they were alerted to the situation by an elderly fisherman around 6:30am who said he saw a man enter the water for a swim but never saw him come back out.
The Police were quickly notified and around 8am a jet ski and air search was launched.

A number of items (pictured above) including a towel, clothing, a cap and some boots were located by a member of the public on the beach around 6am.
So far the search has not been able to find any sign of the missing man.
Authorities are hopeful it may be a false alarm.
