First it was supermarket workers being physically and verbally abused, now it’s been revealed that Gold Coast City Council officers are also copping unnecessary abuse whilst out on the job.
The shocking revelations were made by Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate at a press conference on Wednesday afternoon.
Mayor Tate says some of the instances have been quite disturbing, including one case where an officer was spat on and told “I hope you get COVID-19” by a member of the public.

He’s now issued a stern warning to those caught abusing officers, saying they will be prosecuted.
“I have been getting reports that city officers are copping abuse,” they Mayor said.
“Please, they are here to help and they are serving. If you want to give them abuse, mate go home and watch Netflix and relax… We’re in it together, remember that.”
“I have had people coming up and the report is they were spitting on a council officer and going, I hope you get COVID-19.
“This is not a one-off, there are some examples where you just go where did these people come from?
“So don’t do it, it’s an offence… Some officers do wear body cam and if it’s activated while you’re doing that I will give it to the police and pretty sure they will prosecute.”
It comes as council officers have been forced take drastic measures to stop people from using the city’s outdoor gym equipment, which has been banned during the coronavirus pandemic.
All outdoor gym equipment along the esplanade from Surfers Paradise to Main Beach has now been wrapped up in a bid to stop locals from using it and spreading the virus.
Mayor Tate says it’s a shame council has had to step up their measures, because Gold Coasters aren’t listening.
“There’s a reason why we don’t want you to use it… We want to protect you” the Mayor said.
“He’s trying to get fit and then cop a COVID-19 and lose your health, not clever”.
