REVEALED: The shocking abuse Gold Coast council officers are facing amid coronavirus pandemic

First it was supermarket workers being physically and verbally abused, now it’s been revealed that Gold Coast City Council officers are also copping unnecessary abuse whilst out on the job.

The shocking revelations were made by Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate at a press conference on Wednesday afternoon.

Mayor Tate says some of the instances have been quite disturbing, including one case where an officer was spat on and told “I hope you get COVID-19” by a member of the public.

He’s now issued a stern warning to those caught abusing officers, saying they will be prosecuted.

“I have been getting reports that city officers are copping abuse,” they Mayor said.

“Please, they are here to help and they are serving. If you want to give them abuse, mate go home and watch Netflix and relax… We’re in it together, remember that.”

“I have had people coming up and the report is they were spitting on a council officer and going, I hope you get COVID-19.

“This is not a one-off, there are some examples where you just go where did these people come from?

“So don’t do it, it’s an offence… Some officers do wear body cam and if it’s activated while you’re doing that I will give it to the police and pretty sure they will prosecute.”

It comes as council officers have been forced take drastic measures to stop people from using the city’s outdoor gym equipment, which has been banned during the coronavirus pandemic.

All outdoor gym equipment along the esplanade from Surfers Paradise to Main Beach has now been wrapped up in a bid to stop locals from using it and spreading the virus.

Mayor Tate says it’s a shame council has had to step up their measures, because Gold Coasters aren’t listening.

“There’s a reason why we don’t want you to use it… We want to protect you” the Mayor said.

“He’s trying to get fit and then cop a COVID-19 and lose your health, not clever”.

In the past thirty years I’ve seen three recessions where people lost their homes. Men have been losing assets through the Family Court for 40 years. Not once did any government bail them out. With millennials it’s all different because we couldn’t have them face reality of life.

Wah wah wah, more complaining from Mr Blackwell about how hard done by he has been treated by everyone else. Take some responsibility and accountability for the way you treat others also. You reap what you sow.

Is the Council reducing Rates as many tenants are paying reduced rents for residential & commercial properties. Landlords need to get Council Rates relief probably for the next 6-12 months.

This man is such a virtue signaller. Show us the evidence Tate. What about the abuse of the public everytime you issue an outragous fine on a family just going to the beach. During the so called epidemic all your council “workers” were swanning around earning good money while you abused small business. They even made time to stop and chat about council politics. A group of council planners were seen at Kirra SC NOT socially distancing. 9 people. No one abused them. When you control the news it’s easy to lie. How are you still the Mayor?
