Severe storms kick up west of the Gold Coast

SEVERE thunderstorms are forecast to develop west of the Gold Coast this afternoon. They are expected to be at their strongest over the Darling Downs before weakening on an easterly approach. Here are the warnings as they are issued:

4.03PM: CANCELLATION of detailed Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Southeast Queensland. 

The Bureau of Meteorology says the immediate threat of severe thunderstorms has eased, however thunderstorms are continuing over the eastern Darling Downs and will continue to be monitored.

A more general severe thunderstorm warning remains in place for parts of the Darling Downs, Granite Belt and Southeast Coast.

3.05PM: SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING for DAMAGING WIND, HEAVY RAINFALL and LARGE HAILSTONES for parts of Ipswich, Scenic Rim, Southern Downs, Toowoomba and Lockyer Valley. 

The Bureau of Meteorology warns that, at 3:05pm, severe thunderstorms were detected on weather radar near Maryvale.

These thunderstorms are moving towards the northeast and are forecast to affect the area northwest of Cunninghams Gap by 4:05pm.

Damaging winds, heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding and large hailstones are likely.

2.21PM: SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING for DAMAGING WIND, HEAVI RAINFALL and LARGE HAILSTONES for parts of Ipswich, Scenic Rim, Southern Downs and Lockyer Valley. 

The Bureau of Meteorology warns thunderstorms are moving towards the northeast and are forecast to affect Oakington, Cunninghams Gap and the area south of Cunninghams Gap by 2:50pm, and Aratula by 3:20pm.

Damaging winds, heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding and large hailstones are likely.

1.24PM: SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING for DAMAGING WIND and LARGE HAILSTONES for people in parts of the Darling Downs and Granite Belt and Southeast Coast Forecast Districts.

The Bureau of Meteorology advises that severe thunderstorms are likely to produce damaging winds and large hailstones in the warning area over the next several hours.

Locations which may be affected include Warwick, Toowoomba, Stanthorpe, Boonah, Oakey and Pittsworth.

A detailed warning for damaging wind and large hailstones is current for parts of the Scenic Rim and Southern Downs. The BOM warns severe storms are moving towards the east and are forecast to affect Killarney by 2pm and the area south of Cunninghams Gap by 2.30pm.
