Steve Baxter founded several IT and telecoms start-up, launching his first start-up from his bedroom. Baxter said it’s vital for kids to build entrepreneurial skills that will make them capable of building a global business from anywhere.
“Entrepreneurship is a real career path and we are big advocates for teaching kids the tech and entrepreneurial skills they need for the digital economy, so they can hit the ground running as soon as they leave school and university,” Mr Baxter said.
“We need to teach children more than tech skills, we need to show them how to dream big, give their dreams a go and back themselves to build their own businesses; that’s what entrepreneurship is about.”
Baxter will share his wisdom on the start-up journey, innovation and Queensland’s entrepreneurial landscape in a new public community event that will celebrate the beginning of an action-packed festival.
Somerset Celebration of Entrepreneurship Festival Chairperson Dane Oman said the Gold Coast is thriving as an entrepreneurial city, with local start-ups engaging in ground-breaking work but said it’s vital to keep momentum.
“We are so proud of the festival we have curated this year; in 2017 we held the very first Somerset Celebration of Entrepreneurship festival, and it was very well received by the Gold Coast, so we were inspired to make each upcoming festival bigger and better,” Mr Oman said.
“This year we have twice as many bright minds joining us on the Gold Coast from across Queensland, each offering insights and stories from their rich, diverse experiences from within the start-up world.
“There will be over 45 sessions and a host of roving entrepreneurs, workshops and events taking place at this October’s Somerset Celebration of Entrepreneurship, so we encourage the entire Gold Coast community to get involved and come and check it out as there is something on offer for everyone.”
