GOLD Coasters are being called on to sign a petition to show their support for a light rail extension ahead of the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
Member for Southport Rob Molhoek has sponsored the petition, backed by the Southport Chamber of Commerce, calling for the light rail to be linked up with the heavy rail in the north.

It follows the Premier’s comments last month that the Newman Government would commit to the extension of the light rail if they were elected next year with a mandate to recycle government assets to enable more than $8 billion to be spent on infrastructure.
“But the people of the Gold Coast must speak up,” Mr Molhoek said.
“The Premier has confirmed our government will prioritise delivery of the light rail extension, but only if there is an undeniable call from the community that this is a vital project for our city.”
Southport Chamber of Commerce President Laird Marshall said the connection of the light rail to the Helensvale train station was a huge economic driver.
“We’re already seeing the result of increased activity along the light rail corridor,” Mr Marshall said.
“Our city needs an integrated, world-class transport network if we are to realise our potential and drive economic growth.”
Mr Molhoek will present the petition to State Parliament.
