Severe storms kick up around the Gold Coast

5.15PM: FLASH flooding has gripped parts of Brisbane, with reports of cars being swept away in streets of water.

A severe thunderstorm has delivered 100mm of rainfall to Inala in just one hour – 75mm of which fell in 30 minutes. 

A 106km/h wind gust was recorded at Redcliffe at 5.15pm and there are reports that up to five cars have floated away down Alexandra St, Bowen Hills. (pictures below)

More than 14000 homes and business are without power across the southeast, the majority in the CBD.

Trains have also been suspended in and out of the City centre with reports of flooded tracks. 

These thunderstorms are moving towards the north and are forecast to affect Bribie Island, Comboyuro Point and waters off Bribie Island by 5:55pm.

Heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding, damaging winds and large hailstones are likely.

4.20PM: SEVERE thunderstorms are currently affecting Moreton Island, Brisbane and parts of the Gympie, Logan, Somerset, Redland, Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay Council Areas.

The Bureau of Meteorology warns that, at 4:20pm, severe thunderstorms were detected on weather radar near Brisbane CBD, Sunnybank Hills, Archerfield, Camp Hill and the ranges south of Jimna.

Heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding, damaging winds and large hailstones are likely – with 75mm of rain recorded in 30 minutes near Redbank Plains and Inala.

The Gold Coast has so far escaped the action, despite being included in the generalised severe thunderstorm warning. 

4PM: (General) SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING for HEAVY RAINFALL, DAMAGING WIND and LARGE HAILSTONES.

For people in the Wide Bay and Burnett, Southeast Coast and parts of the Central Highlands and Coalfields, Capricornia and Darling Downs and Granite Belt Forecast Districts.

Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding, damaging winds and large hailstones in the warning area over the next several hours.

Locations which may be affected include Warwick, Gold Coast, Toowoomba, Brisbane, Maroochydore, Gympie, Bundaberg, Gladstone, Kingaroy, Fraser Island, Biloela, Rolleston, and Baralaba.

Severe thunderstorms are no longer occurring in the Maranoa and Warrego district and the warning for this district is CANCELLED.

3PM: WE’RE being told to keep an eye on the sky this afternoon, with severe thunderstorms rapidly developing around the Gold Coast.

A generalised severe storm warning is in place for the City of Gold Coast, with damaging winds, heavy rainfall and large hailstones likely over the next several hours.

At the moment, there are several severely warned thunderstorms affecting the southeast, including a very dangerous storm north of Boonah.
