THE identity of the gunman behind a terrifying siege which brought Sydney to its knees has been revealed.

Channel Nine identified the gunman as Man Haron Monis – a 49-year-old radical Muslim cleric and self-styled preacher of Islamic State who is currently on bail for accessory to murder.

Monis is no stranger to authorities, having previously sent abusive letters to the families of eight dead Australian soldiers criticising Australia’s involvement in Afghanistan and labeling Australian soldiers as murderers.

More recently, Monis was earlier this year charged with 40 indecent and sexual assault charges for offences alleged to have occurred while operating as a “spiritual healer” in western Sydney between 2000 and 2002.
