A man has died after losing control of the van he was driving and ploughing through several fences before coming to a stop against a tree in the backyard of a home in Sydney’s Inner West.
The accident happened at Burwood shortly after 5.30am on Friday.
Police said the 76-year-old man was driving south along Park Road when his Toyota Hiace van left the road.
The van crashed through two fences, one metal and one wooden, before careering through the backyard of a home and coming to a stop.
Police said the van came to rest against a small tree and a third fence.
Residents found the 76-year-old unconscious on the ground.
He was the only person travelling in the van.
After being treated by paramedics at the scene, the man was rushed to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in a critical condition with pelvis and chest injuries.
Sadly, he died a short time later.
Park Road was closed for several hours while investigators examined the scene and the wreckage was cleared.
As investigations continue, police are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
