Thousands of trees to be planted across the Coast

Mayor Tom Tate took up the tools this morning to plant the first of 50,000 trees on the Gold Coast.

Broadwater Parklands is the first location for the project that will see hundreds of shade trees planted at the northern end.

Cr Tate joked he’s becoming the “greenest Mayor in all the land”.

“This is about shade and getting back to nature,” he said.

“Other areas of the Parklands offer a great mixture of cycleways, stages, cafes, rock pools and lawn areas.

Council has specifically chosen trees that will produce the best shade while retaining the grass under the canopy.

The Gold Coast City plan ensures a minimum of the city’s footprint remains as green and open spaces.

Currently, they’re just under that percentage but the mayor is confident they’ll reach that target shortly.
