Two dead, one critical in highway smash

TWO men have died and a woman is fighting for her life in hospital following a horror head-on crash in the New South Wales Hunter region.

Police said a Subaru Forrester and an Audi Q3 collided on the New England Highway just south of Muswellbrook just before 3.30pm on Friday.

Sadly, the 48-year-old man driving the Subaru died at the scene.

A man and a woman travelling in the Audi, both aged 59, were trapped in the wreck with life-threatening injuries and had to be cut free by emergency services.

Once released, they were airlifted to Newcastle’s John Hunter Hospital in separate helicopters.

Tragically, police released a statement this morning confirming the man succumbed to his injuries and died in hospital last night.

His partner remains in a critical condition and is undergoing surgery, police said.

Officers from Hunter Valley Police District are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.
