Wild winds topple tree on M1

A LARGE gum tree has come crashing down across the M1 on the southern Gold Coast.

The tree toppled onto the northbound lanes of the motorway at Elanora about 2.20pm.

The large gum tree was brought down by wild winds, whipped up by Cyclone Oma offshore.

It’s causing dramas for motorists in the area, with the tree blocking at least one lane.

Delays are stretching for several kilometres, with cars queued back past the border.

Crews are on the scene, working to remove the debris from the motorway.

The Coast has been lashed by wind gusts in excess of 80km/h for most of the day.

Meanwhile, a traffic accident is causing headaches for motorists travelling south through the same area.

It’s understood a truck and a van collided in the southbound lanes at Palm Beach just before 2.30pm.

Traffic has been reduced to a crawl through the area, with delays stretching back to Merrimac.
