MARK Winterbottom has taken over the V8 Supercars’ championship lead, following two wins and a second-place finish in Auckland on the weekend.
The Gold Coast driver denied Kiwi youngster Scott McLaughlin a fairytale finish to his home round after taking the chequered flag in race four yesterday.
ABC News reports, the Ford Performance Racing star took advantage of a faltering Red Bull-Holden outfit to turn a 49-point deficit into a 107-point advantage over veteran Craig Lowndes on the drivers’ standings.

Winterbottom is yet to win a title in his decade competing but backed-up his win at Bathurst, crossing the line nearly seven seconds ahead of his 20-year-old rival.
“I wanted to lead leaving,” Winterbottom said. “I hate that you’re leading Saturday night and then someone takes it back off you on Sunday.”
“We now have two weeks to enjoy it, rather than one night.”
Round five of the championship begins on May 16 in Perth.
