Woman attacked by shark while swimming in Whitsundays

A WOMAN remains in a critical condition after being attacked by a shark off the Whitsunday Coast.

The 46-year-old is understood to have been swimming from a charter yacht in Cid Harbour, approximately six nautical miles north of Hamilton Island, when she was bitten about 5:15pm Wednesday.

Fortunately, a rescue chopper happened to be in the area at the time of the attack and was quickly tasked to assist the seriosuly injured woman.

“At 5.45pm, a Critical Care Flight Paramedic was winched down to treat the patient who was unconscious and had lost a large volume of blood” A Queensland Ambulance spokesperson told myGC.

She is believed to have suffered a significant bite wound to her right thigh and another bite to her lower right leg.

After being treated on scene, the woman was then airlifted to Mackay Base Hospital, where she remains in a critical condition.
