Woman killed after car sheared in half in horror crash

UPDATE at 5:00 PM | DRUGS, alcohol and extreme speed are all believed to have been factors in a catastrophic crash that killed a woman in Melbourne.

The woman was killed when her blue BMW sedan smashed into a pole in the centre median of the Nepean Highway at Cheltenham, in the city’s southeast, about 5.30am on Saturday.

Police say the BMW was travelling well above 180km/h when it slammed into the pole.

The impact was horrific, with senior police describing the crash as one of the worst they’ve ever seen in Melbourne.

The six-lane highway was littered with car parts and debris from the vehicle which was torn into three main pieces.

It’s understood the driver’s seat was ripped from the car on impact, while the rear seats and left hand side of the BMW came to rest 100 metres down the highway.

Speaking to reporters, Senior Sergeant Warren Francis-Pester admitted he had never seen a crash like it.

“It’s an incredible scene and I’ve been in the police force for 30 years,” Senior Sergeant Francis-Pester said.

“I’ve never seen debris spread over six lanes of highway like this for a single collision.”

It’s understood the woman was seen driving erratically near the Southland Shopping Centre earlier in the night.

She reportedly had a male passenger in the vehicle at the time who, according to 9News, “feared for his life” and got out before the crash.

Police are investigating the circumstances leading up to the horrific collision and say drugs and alcohol were definite factors.
