World’s Greatest Shave: Brave Gold Coasters shave, colour locks for charity

Gold Coast shopping centre My Centre Nerang is celebrating today following a successful World’s Greatest Shave event, which saw the centre raise much needed funds for The Leukemia Foundation.

Crowds gathered at the Nerang shopping centre on Saturday to witness dozens of brave Gold Coasters shave and colour their hair all in the name of charity.

Among those who chopped off their locks was local Takai (Taco) Mohokar who’s been growing his dreadlocks for about as long as the World’s Greatest Shave has been running.

In a pre-shave interview, Taco revealed one of the main reasons he decided to take part in the annual event was so that he could support one of his good friends, Jim, who is currently fighting the blood cancer.

Jim was in the crowd on Saturday and got to witness the special deed by his mate take place.

“He’s an awesome guy, I cant believe what he’s doing for me, I’m very emotional right now,” Jim told the crowd.

While the overall tally for the entire day has not yet been revealed, My Centre Nerang confirmed on Monday that their team alone raised almost $6000.

“Well we haven’t even counted the tins, or heard the final amount for Taco and our other shavers on the day, however we are pleased to announce that the centre’s team raised $5,946.00,” the shopping centre said.

“This is an amazing effort by everyone. There were tears shed, there was laughter, lots of laughter, proud moments and hearts filled with love and appreciation.”

So far, Taco has raised a whopping $32,000 on his World’s Greatest Shave fundraising page, more than his goal of $30,000.
