AUSTRALIA’S TYLER WRIGHT has claimed victory at the Vans US Open of Surfing at Huntington Beach in California on Monday morning.
The New South Wales surfer, competing in her third final of the year, overcame local girl Stephanie Gilmore to kickstart her world championship campaign.
Wright took the win with a two-wave score of 14.77 out of 20 to pip five-time world champion Gilmore, who could only post 13.16 in a final which had to be restarted after a waveless lull marred the original start.

Gilmore has now finished runner-up in two events this year after starting 2014 with victory at the Roxy Pro on the Gold Coast.
Sunday’s result drops Gilmore to fourth in the rankings.
Sally Fitzgibbons, beaten earlier in the day in a semi-final clash with Gilmore, retains the No.2 ranking behind defending world champion Carissa Moore.
