10yo pregnant rape victim refused an abortion in India
A 10-year-old Indian girl who was allegedly repeatedly raped by a relative has been refused an abortion by India’s Supreme Court.
The youngster’s pregnancy was only discovered a few weeks ago after she complained of pains in her stomach, the BBC reports.
According to the news organisation, the child was at least 32 weeks pregnant, and in India, abortions are forbidden after 20 weeks.
In court on July 28, the decision to refuse the child an abortion was handed down, with doctors revealing “termination of the pregnancy would be too risky” and that “the foetus is developing at a healthy rate”.
The accused rapist is currently in jail, awaiting a trial.
