NSW woman accused of stealing almost $70,000 from dying brother

A woman has allegedly stolen almost $70,000 from her terminally ill brother’s bank account after being trusted with his debit card to help pay his ongoing medical bills.

Police said the 54-year-old woman had been given access to her terminally ill brother’s debit card in March last year.

She was supposed to use it to assist with paying his ongoing medical bills.

But, after checking over his bank statements, police said the man and his daughter identified “a number of discrepancies”.

It’s alleged the 54-year-old woman had secretly withdrawn $68,529 from his account and spent it on purchases for herself over a period of 12 months.

The terminally ill man alerted police and, following an investigation, the 54-year-old woman was arrested on Monday 11 April.

She was taken to Lismore police station and charged with dishonestly obtain a financial advantage by deception.

She will appear at Lismore Local Court on Monday 8 August.
