16 people trapped in high rise lift

SIXTEEN people have been rescued after spending more than half an hour stuck in a high rise lift in Surfers Paradise.

The group became trapped after cramming into an elevator in an apartment tower on Hanlan Street on Sunday afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the high rise building just before 3pm.

Paramedics, including the Bicycle Response Team, were on standby at the scene but no injuries were reported.

It’s understood the group was released from the overloaded lift without further incident about 3.30pm.

The incident comes as thousands of interstate Schoolies begin arriving in Surfers Paradise.
