18 arrested in sweeping childcare raids

EIGHTEEN people have been arrested in sweeping raids across Sydney targeting thieving childcare providers who allegedly pilfered millions of dollars from the Federal Government.

The action is all part of Strike Force Mercury, formed in July last year to investigate family day care fraud.

As part of ongoing investigations, Strike Force detectives this morning raided 22 properties across Sydney’s southwest and one property in the Illawarra, and arrested three men and 15 women.

All 18 people were taken to local police stations where they remained this afternoon, being questioned by investigators over their alleged roles in the syndicate.

Police allege the group fraudulently claimed for Commonwealth benefits under the Child Care Subsidy Scheme.

Investigations under Strike Force Mercury are ongoing.
