18 arrested on Schoolies night one

Gold Coast police made 18 arrests during the first night of celebrations for the 2017 Schoolies.

There were six male schoolies arrested,  charged with six drug-related offences, the majority of these were for drug possession.

Last year, for the same time frame, there were eight schoolies arrested.

Overnight, there were also 12 non-schoolies arrested in Surfers Paradise on 24 drug-related charges.

The arrests come after police pledged to crack down on drug use during the event.

“Schoolies week is a timely reminder to the community that the possession and consumption of drugs is illegal,” police said in a statement on Saturday morning.

“Not only is it illegal – it is also dangerous and could have fatal consequences.”

Police said they were generally pleased with the behaviour of schoolies during the first night of celebrations.
