A contract worker has died following an incident at a coal mine in Central Queensland.
Mine operator BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) confirmed the tragic news in a statement on Monday afternoon.
They said the contractor, from Independent Mining Services, died “as a result of injuries sustained in an incident that occurred during maintenance work at the Goonyella Riverside Mine” on Saturday.

“We extend our deepest sympathies and support to his family, colleagues and friends at this very sad and difficult time,” BHP said.
“Support services are in place for family, friends, the contractors involved and all of our people at Goonyella Riverside Mine.”
Natural Resources and Mines Minister Anthony Lynham said a full investigation is now underway.
“Our mines inspectors have been at the mine since the weekend undertaking a thorough investigation into the cause and nature of the incident,” he said.
“Every worker in Queensland deserves the right to come home from work safely each day.”
