2018 Commonwealth Games advisory committee takes over

THE Gold Coast Commonwealth Games Minister, Jann Stuckey, says the Mayor has given his blessing to the latest committee connected with the event.

The Embracing 2018 Advisory Committee will take over from the Legacy Advisory Committee the Gold Coast City Council appointed.

Ms Stuckey says the chairman of that committee, former premier Rob Borbidge, will lead the new entity.

She says the Government always intended to appoint a committee to serve the interests of the whole of Queensland.

“That was the culmination of a lot of consultation around the state, it was also consultation with our online survey, so we really needed to be able to make sure that we had captured a broad range of people’s views,” she said.

Mr Borbidge says the latest committee’s predecessors have laid important groundwork

“We’ve looked at what’s worked at Commonwealth Games and Olympic Games up until now and importantly what hasn’t worked so that we can look at the best, look at the failures and make sure that what we do moving on is really going to deliver some lasting benefits to the Gold Coast community and to Queenslanders,” he said.
