457 visa scrapped

The controversial 457 visa no longer exists.

The four-year visa, introduced by the Howard Government in 1996, allowed foreign workers to find employment in one of 650 occupations.

Because the Government is axing the 457 visa, that doesn’t mean there won’t be a new one – in fact there will be two visas introduced in its place.

There will be a two and a four-year visa.

For both, applicants will need at least two years of relevant work experience, that wasn’t required under the 457 scheme.

To qualify for the four year visa you will need to have a good grasp of the English language.

Applicants must also complete a criminal history check.
