Mass power outage sends thousands into darkness on Gold Coast

UPDATE @ 4.00pm: POWER has been restored to thousands of homes and businesses across the Gold Coast following a mass blackout this afternoon.

More than 62,000 homes and businesses were thrown into darkness just after 3.00pm Tuesday.

Local roads were also chaos with the outage affecting traffic lights from Hope Island to Casuarina in northern NSW.

Powerlink Queensland has confirmed that work was being conducted at their substation in Mudgeeraba and it was an unexpected equipment failure which sparked the blackout which lasted about half an hour.

Energex thanked Gold Coasters for their patience during the outage.

EARLIER @ 3.15pm: A MAJOR power outage is causing chaos across the Gold Coast this afternoon.

More than 62,000 homes and businesses have been affected by the mass blackout.

Local roads have also been thrown into disarray with the outage affecting traffic lights. Motorists are being urged to drive with caution.

Energex says crews are desperately working to investigate the cause.

You left out all the homes and bussiness that are south of the border .. the entire town of Murwillumbah and surrounding towns

West Tweed Heads as well. All good now thank you
