91yo accused of smuggling cocaine faces court

A 91-year-old man has faced court today, accused of smuggling almost five kilograms of cocaine.

Victor Twarts was arrested when he was busted at Sydney Airport with cocaine hidden inside 27 bars of soap on July 8.

The retired Sydney surgeon claims criminals tricked him into smuggling the drugs, believed to be worth more than $1 million.

In the Downing Centre Local Court today, Twartz waived his right to a committal hearing meaning he will appear at Sydney’s District Court on November 20 to get a trial date.

If found guilty, Twarts will be the oldest person in the world to be charged with drug trafficking.
