A Gold Coast man’s walk to help his ‘brothers’

A local man walked from Nerang to Broadbeach on Friday morning, where he is working on the Pacific Fair re-development, for good cause.

Steve Toyer is a supporter of Mates in Construction, a charity which raises awareness of suicide in the construction industry.

Steve has been involved in the sector for about 12 years now and said the group helped him out a few years ago and now he wants to give back.

He said the aim is to “help our brothers out when they’re not having a good day”.

Steve said the “two highest demographics in Australia for suicide are the 24 to 45 year old male construction worker and the next one is the over 85 year old male”.

In two weeks time he will head to Papua New Guinea with 36 other guys to walk the Kokoda track.  They will be hoping to raise $150,000.

Their trek is being sponsored by Scentre Group, the Westfield owned company in charge of the Pacific Fair re-development.

Steve works as the Chairman of their Safety Committee on site.
