A nervous wait for Bird

GOLD COAST Titans enforcer Nate Myles is confident teammate Greg Bird will be free to line up against him in this month’s State of Origin series opener.

Bird faces a nervous wait after being placed on report for a lifting tackle in the 60th minute of Saturday’s 40-18 loss to South Sydney.

It comes just over a week out from the NSW team being named for the May 28 opener in Brisbane.

Anything over a one-match ban would rule Bird out of contention for the Blues, robbing them of one of their most-experienced and reliable performers.

However, Queensland star Nate Myles thinks his colleague and friend shouldn’t worry too much.

“Nah, that’s a good tackle, mate,” Myles said when asked if he had any divided loyalties about Bird’s situation.

“Ask anyone in the game – that’s a good tackle.”

Bird was put on report for a tackle which involved Rabbitohs winger Bryson Goodwin, with the referee’s decision clearly irking the Australian representative.

“Do you want me to rip his Oztags off?,” Bird told the referee, a reference to a non-tackle version of rugby league.

Titans coach John Cartwright was also unconcerned over the incident.

“Sometimes a lifting tackle is a traditional rugby league tackle and, initially, that looked to fall into that category,” Cartwright said.
