Abandoned newborn baby rescued from Beijing toilet pipe [Confronting images]

A NEWBORN baby girl found abandoned headfirst down the pipe of a public toilet in China has been rescued after members of the public alerted police to the sound of the infant’s cries.

The Beijing Times reports, despite the circumstances, the newborn appeared in good condition after a police officer reached down the pipe and pulled her free.

Police told reporters it appeared the baby had been born in the toilet at the Beijing public facility and abandoned there.

Unfortunately, cases of abandoned babies are all too common in the country where a one-child policy leads to heavy fines for couples who have more than one child.

Officers are still trying to identify the newborn’s parents.
