GOLD Coasters are being urged to open their hearts and homes and adopt an adult cat from the Animal Welfare League for just $20 this weekend.
The number of abandoned or surrendered cats being cared for by the AWLQ has reached critical levels, with almost 800 adult felines now spread across the charity’s shelters in Brisbane and on the Gold Coast.
In order to help free up space, the charity will this weekend offer all adult cats up for adoption for just $20.

State Rehoming Manager Melinda Phipps said by adopting one cat, you’re technically saving two.
“We’ve launched the ‘Get Set for the Sale’ campaign in an effort to rehome these abandoned and surrendered cats, and make way for others which are in foster care,” Ms Phipps said.
“Every cat that is rehomed provides a space for another in need of a new home, so you’re really helping two cats.”
Australian Olympic champion and AWLQ Ambassador Sally Pearson OAM is backing the campaign and urging all pet lovers to get involved and help out.
“Come on down and make a difference, there is no greater gift to a shelter animal than a loving home,” Ms Pearson said.
“The AWLQ have so many adult cats looking for a new home and they are all gorgeous”.
“When you adopt a pet through AWLQ you are supporting an organisation that re-homes and cares for up to 18,000 stray, surrendered and abandoned animals each year.”
Every cat is desexed, microchipped and vaccinated.
Rehoming centres are located at Coombabah on the Gold Coast and at Warra and Willawong in Brisbane.
