Alleged car thief charged following police chase in Sydney

A man who allegedly led police on a pursuit in a stolen car through Sydney has been arrested and charged after crashing into a concrete bollard and flipping the vehicle onto its side.

Police said the green Mitsubishi Pajero was allegedly stolen from a home on Campbell Street in Surry Hills just after 1am this morning.

A short time later, officers spotted the Pajero travelling along Martin Road in Moore Park.

Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver allegedly failed to stop.

Police gave chase and pursued the Pajero up until it slammed into a concrete bollard and collided with a tree.

The vehicle came to rest on its side near the corner of Martin Road and Robertson Road.

The driver, a 27-year-old man, jumped out of the vehicle and allegedly tried to run from the scene.

He was arrested by police, however, and taken to St Vincent’s Hospital for treatment to minor injuries.

The man was released into police custody today and formally charged with take and drive conveyance without consent, and police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously.

He was scheduled to appear in Central Local Court today.
