Alleged child sex offender arrested in Wagga after 18 years on the run

A man who failed to appear in court on a child sex charge 18 years ago has been arrested in the NSW Riverina City of Wagga Wagga.

The now 39-year-old man was arrested in Darlinghurst on 30 January in 1998 and charged with sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl.

A conviction warrant was issued for his arrest after he failed to appear in court.

After receiving information from detectives in Kings Cross, the man was arrested by police in Victoria last month.

He appeared in Melbourne Magistrates Court where he was granted bail to reappear in Central Local Court on Wednesday last week but again, he failed to show.

A new warrant was issued for the man’s arrest and he was located by police from Wagga Wagga Local Area Command the following day.

The man was arrested and this time refused bail to appear in Central Local Court today.
